From the creators of Les Miserables comes a stunning theatrical experience centering on a classic love story. In a modern re-telling of Madame Butterfly, two lovers - an American GI and a Vietnamese girl - are united in love but separated by war during the fall of Saigon. Miss Saigon is an international sensation and one of the longest-running Broadway musicals capturing multiple Tony Awards. An epic and daring pop opera that is universal in its emotional power, Miss Saigon features such musical numbers as I Still Believe, Why God Why, Sun and Moon and I’d Give My Life for You. Contains mature themes, situations, and language.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

MISS SAIGON is a West End musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr. It is a modern adaptation of Giacomo Puccini''s opera MADAME BUTTERFLY, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. The setting of the plot is relocated to 1970's Saigon during the Vietnam War, and MADAME BUTTERFLY'S American Lieutenant and Japanese Geisha coupling is replaced by a romance between an American GI and a Vietnamese bar girl. The musical's inspiration was a photograph (above), inadvertently found by Schönberg in a magazine. The photo showed a Vietnamese mother leaving her daughter at a departure gate at Tan Son Nhut Air Base to board a plane headed for the United States where her father, an ex-GI, would be in a position to provide a much better life for her child. Schöenberg considered this mother's actions for her child to be "The Ultimate Sacrifice," an idea central to the plot of MISS SAIGON.
MISS SAIGON premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in London on September 20, 1989, closing after 4,264 performances on October 30, 1999. It opened at the Broadway Theatre in New York City in 1991. The musical represented Schönberg and Boublil's second major success, following LES MISÉRABLES in 1980. As of August 2010, MISS SAIGON is still the 10th longest-running Broadway show in musical theatre history. On October 21, 2009, a film version of the musical was reported to be in "early stages of development" with the hope of a 2011 release.
It is fitting that Moonlight chose to produce MISS SAIGON as this past April marked the 35th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. I can think of no better musical to show off this beautiful stage house than the powerful and epic MISS SAIGON, as will be evidenced by a helicopter landing ON STAGE! Happy 30th Anniversary Moonlight; here's to another 30 more!
